Your Water Meter
When will you read my meter?
We attempt to read all meters within 27 to 33 days. We read and bill by cycles (grouping of customers geographically adjacent) designed to be efficient to our operations, which in turn helps to keep your costs for water down. Call Customer Service for information about your next scheduled read day.
How to Read Your Meter
Classic Meter
The water meter reads like an automobile odometer. Instead of miles, it measures cubic feet of water. Each cubic foot is equal to 7.48 gallons of water. Customers are charged for each hundred cubic feet (Ccf), or 748 gallons.
In the illustration below, the numbers under the words “CUBIC FEET” reflect the total number of cubic feet of water recorded since the meter was installed. Because our charge is based on units of 100 cubic feet (Ccf), the meter reader discards the last two numbers with the black background. So the current reading on the Classic Meter Register shown below would be 0000.
If the next time we read your meter and it is 0012, subtract 0000 (previous read) from 0012 (current read) and you would get 12, which means you used 12 Ccf, or 1,200 cubic feet (8,976 gallons), for that period. See illustration of Classic meter face below.
AMR Meter
In the illustration below, the numbers above the words “cu ft” reflect the total number of cubic feet of water recorded since the meter was installed. Because our charge is based on units of 100 cubic feet (Ccf), the meter reader discards the last five (5) numbers to the right of the odometer read. So the current reading on the AMR Meter Register shown would be 000,0.
If the next time we read your meter and it is at 001,2, subtract 000,0 from 001,2 (current read) and you would get 12, which means you used 12 Ccf or 1,200 cubic feet (8,976 gallons) for that period. See illustration of AMR meter face below.
How to Check For Leaks
A simple process to detect leaks that may exist anywhere in your home or business.
Classic Meter
- Turn off all water inside and outside, making sure that no one uses water during the test period.
- Read your meter. Make a note of where the sweep hand is located on your meter.
- Wait 10 to 15 minutes and see if the hand has moved.
- If the hand has moved, there is a leak somewhere.
Leaks inside your home or business can be very expensive and can cause significant property damage. The customer is responsible for everything from the connection of their service line to Fontana Water Company’s coupling.
(AMR Check for Leaks)
AMR METER
Automated Meter Reading (AMR) meters have been created to detect leaks within your home, please do the following to check for leaks if you have an AMR meter:
- Look for a faucet icon above the LCD readout on your meter. If there is no faucet icon above the LCD readout, no leaks have been detected within the last 24 hours.
- If the faucet icon is flashing it indicates an intermittent leak occurrence over the last 24 hours. Check interior and exterior faucets and valves in toilets to see if leakage is occurring.
- If the faucet icon is solid it indicates a continuous leak occurrence over the last 24 hours. Check the 9th digit in your LCD readout to see if it is incrementing. If so, check interior and exterior faucets, valves in toilets, and look around the exterior of the home for signs of possible leaks.
